What distro would benefit this old box?
I just got my hands on one yesterday, and the owner insits on putting a more modern OS on there, eliminating Irix. I've been searching around, but can't come up with any info regarding its architecture.

As you know you can't just install any old distro. You'll need an operating system compiled for the MIPS. Red Hat used to have a port but I don't believe they do any more. I have never installed Linux on SGI but I have installed it on Sun Sparc which would present similar challenges to what you will have to deal with. I would suggest Debian if you really want to install Linux on it. Here are some Links:

And here is lots of details about hardware.

I have not found a specific Linux version, but SGI do have a linux development software package for IRIX that runs on more common architectures (over a Linux installation) - I know that is of little help, but you might want to develop on a standard machine and transfer that over to the IRIX software.
I think Slackware is capable of running on that hardware, but I don't know for sure - No I can't find that info - I may be imagining things.
However a case study is
