What's you folks' view of the whole HDDVD deal?

I think I saw the random number you are referring to on slashdot but I didn't realize what they were referring to. They listed some hex string. What is it, a magic key that busts HDDVD encryption or some such?

Exactly that.
Remember DVD Jon and libdvdcss? This is episode two, and it REALLY pisses them off They spent years of research and probably thousands, if not millions of dollars on researching the AACS encryption mechanism, and boom. Within weeks of its release, we all have the key
Sites are getting sued for displaying it... google is getting ordered to remove _indexes_ of all sites that have it on them... the Wikipedia article is locked (but still has the key in the URL ... but hey, look at planet.ubuntu.com!

Ahh, I had read about this months ago actually. I thought it was something new. It's odd that it took until now to become big news. Here's where I first read about it:

Erm, no, Void - it's a different story While Muslix managed to find a way of how to extract individual "Volume Unique" keys that allow decryption of the disc they were extracted from... 09 f9 11 02 9d 74 e3 5b d8 41 56 c5 63 56 88 c0 is the "Processing" key, which allows decrypting a vast majority of HDDVD and BluRay discs released to date.
