what is going on?

No, they are just documenting their APIs in accordance with the EU rulings and like they should have done from the beginning. The have also pledged not to sue open source projects over interfacing their products through the APIs. That's not opening anything, just documenting interfaces.

nice of them not to sue people for making compatible software, looks like they finally realised that if anything interoperability helps them, unless they're prepared to admit that their products can't compete in the market that is.
