NBC Olympic Coverage not for Linux users

Place to discuss anything, almost. No politics, religion, Microsoft, or anything else that I (the nazi censor) deem inappropriate.

NBC Olympic Coverage not for Linux users

Post by Void Main »

So I am watching the Olympics on NBC and they mentioned that if you missed some coverage you can go to their web site and watch live events or previous events. I go to their web site only to find out you need Windows or Mac with Silverlight:

Article about no respect for Linux:

So I click on the "feedback" link to let them know that I am not pleased (in a nice way) and the email bounces back saying it was rejected because it looked like "spam". Interesting, so I resend the message but changed the one mention of "Linux" to "L-i-n-u-x" and the one mention of "Firefox" to "F-i-r-e-f-o-x" and it seemed to go through just fine. These guys really like to play nice. Of course all this stuff is surely Microsoft's doing because Microsoft's logos are all over the place. Here's the email I sent:

Subject: Olympic Video

It would be nice to be able to watch the video on your site but I do
not use a Macintosh or Windows. I have no problem watching video on
virtually any other site on the Internet using L-i-n-u-x and
F-i-r-e-f-o-x but you want to force me to install some platform
dependent software to watch your video. It would be nice if you could
provide your video in a standard format that everyone can watch. I
suppose next you are going to tell me I need to have an RCA television
to watch the NBC channel.

Apparently "Linux" and "Firefox" are obscene language, graphics, or spam to Microsoft. :) I was able to find a torrent and download the event I wanted to watch. It wasn't in English but at least I got to see the event, no thanks to NBC and Microsoft.

Over here the BBC are broadcasting everything live via their Flash v9 based web-video. Unfortunately I think the they only ofer it to UK users. Perhaps you could use a .co.uk proxy?

Additionally, maybe you could look into using SopCast (Google it)
I know you can use that with linux, I think there is a frontend called qsopcast? and you need a working mplayer.

PS. I'm upset I missed the Chiva vs USA basketball.

PPS. Long time no see :-)

How ridiculous! Good for you for writing void, but I am sure that your e-mail is going right into their junk-bin.

Tux is right. You can catch the feeds off of BBC and CBC (Canada) if you'd like.

PS) Team USA Basketball is rolling everyone! Back to the good old days!
