I don't know how many of you folks will remember me from F***MS, but I decided to stop by and see what's going on here; I've progressed some, Ive got a functioning RH 9 install, and I'm impressed (with everything but the package manager) I'm stll more oriented toward Debian (2 different Debian installs on my box) but RH has come a LONG way from 5.2 (my first Linux install; couldn't get X to work); now I'm setting up a LAN at home, and I'm not sure if I want to use Debian (my long term love) or RedHat (the new hottie); maybe you guys can help sort things out.

Hey Creedon, er, I mean bullgoose. :) I like both Red Hat and Debian. They are both great each in their own way. I have to admit that I use and have used Red Hat by far the most since they first appeared many years ago. I really like RH8 and RH9 even though I was initially horrified when I first installed RH8, I now realize it's an overall positive move forward. Debian is, well, Debian, probably the most awesome all around distro there is.

Hi Void; long time no see. Yeah, you've pretty much summed up my problem; Redhat's last two releases are a definite step toward main-stream adoption of Linux for the desktop. I know that there's a lot of conjecture in the community about the Bluecurve desktop, but it's really going to appeal to the WIN XP crowd, at least by its looks. I'm hoping that when Debian Sarge becomes the Stable branch that the promised GUI installer is as nice as the Redhat installer; that will be a big plus in Debian's favor; the current installer is a pain in the ass, and just too damned technical for a potential WIN convert to attempt. Linux is maturing rapidly; things have changed so much in the four years I've been playing with it, I can't believe it.
Anyway, I'm still torn between two loves; Redhat is real pretty, but the package manager still leaves me cold. I tried apt-rpm for RH 8.0, but it ran into dependancy problems, and I haven't had time to try it for RH 9.0. If Redhat gets its head out of its ass and makes apt-rpm the default, there's no contest. But (BIG but), I still love the Debian philosophy, and the stability of Debian is a HUGE selling point; plus apt-get works out of the box.
I guess I should't bitch; I've got two winning choices; I can't loose!

Yeah, it could be either thing; I'm older 'n dirt, and there's a lot of British humor that goes right over my head; I'll make it easy: if you want to call me "creedon", you go right ahead, I'll answer, but I'm not promising I won't lie.
Anyway, It's good to see a friendly face; this is a really well-ldesigned forum, and I see a lot of sigs I remember; I'm sure I'll be able to annoy SOMEONE here. F***MS just got WAY too juvenile, and I've been wrestling with some pretty heavy hardware problems, so I don't get a chance to do much posting anywhere; now I'm at the point where most of my hardware failures have been fixed, and I'm back on track, so I'll be dropping by with a few questions and a few tips (what few I've got). That's how the community is supposed to work.

Yes you're right many of the best guys there have ceased to post, I drop in now and again. A handful of the cool people regularly post here. You can find what you need here without the script kiddies, windows losers, 13 year olds and trolling moderators (cough: X11) that you find there.

Nice to see you Calum; I'm progressing on my music server, I'm at the stage of converting some of my analog recordings (personal stuff I did at concerts) to a format hat I can preserve on a hard drive; I haven't messed with the Jewel in the Crown, so to speak; that's a live performance recording of Steely Dan from 1973. It was recorded (by me) about 2 moths after they released their first album. The reason I haven't messed with it is because it was recorded on cassette, in monaural, without any noise suppression (Dolby wasn't available then for home use) I'm very reluctant to play the tape; it's OLD, and early live Steely Dan is very rare; as far as I know, my recording of that concert is the only one that exists, so I want to make sure I don't damage it before I can save it. Anyway, from what little I've seen, this is a grown-up homey kind of place; just the thing for old farts like me; 'scuse me a second........HEY KID, GET THE HELL OF MY GRASS!!! >mumbles< Damned kids, got no respect for their elders.

edit: btw, my dad has a great recording of captain beefheart in kirkcaldy 1974 done in much the same way. not only did he and his mate illegally record the gig, but they also sneaked in via the toilet window!

DOSman (in the other forum) here. Good to hear from you and glad to hear that you decided to give RH a try. I hope that seeing my little RH8 box last winter had some bit of influence on your decision to give it a try. Haven't seen you since the snow was real high and the temperature was real low. Speaking of weather, I was out of power for 4 days during the ice storm. That was a long time to be Linux deprived.

I was able to get apt-get and synaptic up and running as well as red-carpet. We're overdue for a get together and Linux chat and if you could use a hand setting any of those up on your machine, let me know. I'd also like to see a bit of Debian and actually hear some of that music you talk about. (never played with any Linux flavor other than Red Hat). I'm too old to get too adventurous... BTW, if you're older than dirt, how the hell old am I???

WOW, it's nice to be remembered! Well, first of all, I'm recovering from a major (m'board & processer) failure; Ol' Fathful crapped out (wouldn't even POST) but, thanks to the power of Tux and the luck of being able to find the same motherboard and processer type (duron 900 Mhz), I didn't loose anything; I just transferred my two hard drives to a different box, fired it up, and all my Linux distros were fine; of course WIN98 was fscked up worse than Hogan's goat, but it's become nothing but a repository for crap anyway; I do everything in Linux now.
Quirk, I gave one scope to dishawjp; we live near each other; seemed like a nice gesture. The other one is sitting in my office. dishawjp; we've got to get together; I've got a ton of new toys, and just wait until you hear who's supplying me with distro's: The hard-nosed WIN-centric sysadmin where I work!! And you're responsible, I showed him that copy of Knoppix you gave me and he damned near soiled himself; he regularly D/L's ISO's of different distro's; he's looking for one to change over the whole company to!! Calum; once I get up to speed, we'll talk about making some copies of some of my more obscure music BTW; BIG Zappa/Beefheart fan!!
