Patents, Open Source model under threat

Software Patents... yes or no?

They protect the originator's intellectual property, so yes.

They inhibit development and negate existing work, so no.

Who cares? It'll all blow over, I'll just look the other way.

It's too complicated, I'll leave it to somebody else.

Patents, Open Source model under threat

Post by Calum » Tue Jun 03, 2003 4:10 am

3 years ago, Europe was very much against software patents, recognising that the ill informed approach to doling out vague intellectual property rights would ultimately kill innovation, now it appears the European parliament no longer sees a need to protect the right to reinvent the wheel, potentially jeopardising projects such as GIMP, Mozilla and Linux/GNU.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention Calum, I heard about it a while ago but for one reason or another I completely forgot about it.

I'll contact the EP Information Office in Brussels asap to let them know how I feel about this and I suggest everyone does the same for his country, there's a very useful link for doing that at the end of the news-article on promote-opensource.org.

Edit: I'll also post a link to the promote-opensource article on my site together with the contact information for the Brussels EP Information Office.

yes, do do that, spread the word, people, because if the people don't make known what they want, then the folks in charge of administration will just have to make it up as they go along!

Thanks for bringing this one back on the surface Calum. To tell you the truth, I had forgotten completely about that and I was also under the impression that the EU had adopted a more positive stance on this issue.

I guess it's time for me to contact my MEP as well.

hey, did newsforge include it? that is very cool,

edit: oh yes! http://newsvac.newsforge.com/newsvac/03 ... tml?tid=17
that is very cool indeed!

i for one feel very bigheaded!
pity slashdot snubbed it though, prefferring to stick with much more important issues like "gentoo releases ppc CDs" and other world shattering exclusives...

Oh, ,I'm truly sorry Calum, it's true that you wrote the article in the first place!
I associated it with Panos because you posted it on promote-opensource.org.
