My name is SuSELinux, from Vancouver, well actually a small town just outside of Van. called Port Moody

Im a Pattern maker, Apprentice Pattern Maker actually. Most of you probably don't know what that is. If there is any one here from England or the rest of the UK, you will probably be the ones to know what a pattern maker is. It just always works out that way, for some reason.

I know that occupation sounds kinda odd for a guy interested in Linux, but my best friends got me hooked about 18 months ago, you can guess with what distro. I like to be the poster boy for technical dunce turned linux zealot

Im basically going to be using you guys, I don't have a whole lot of knowledge to offer, but Im learning, and am willing to learn from the tid bits I pick up here.

I've posted at another forum, wich has some familiar names. I learned about this one there, so If you didn't like me then, well you just wait 'cause Im gonna' ..........make it up to you.

Pattern Making is an old trade, with its roots in the metal casting industry, but how things change.

Take a look at the plastic frame around the screen fo your monitor, ever wonder how that piece of plastic came to be?

Well what our trade involves is making a shape either positive or negative (a cavity) to fascilitate a mould (or we make the mould itself) for the manufacturing of any product where in the material or medium used is at one point is iether liquid or viscious or amorfus before taking final form. Thats why the trade has roots in the metal casting industry /molten metal/.

the trade has some technological points

one method is called CNC (Computer Navigated Cutting) where in a computer guided milling machine cuts the pattern or final mould. A milling machine is a big drill press that can cut on up to 5 axis.

but Im making sound somewhat more complicateed than it really is. I am trained as a classical pattern maker (European). My father was trained by a German Master, and now my father is my Master. Nearly everything that we do is hand made, with the exception of basic power tools: table saw, band saw, gear controlled milling machine for metal work, and a lathe.

I like to think of pattern making as the CIA of industry because we have to know a bit about everything. A casting is moulded machined, and a part manuftactured differently according to the products final purpose, we need to understand that. And becuase we are pattern Makers we have an excuse to ask to look around most any facility that will use the final product to confirm design, and production method.

But look around, its actually amazing when you consider that almost everything that was manufactured touched a pattern makers hands, at one point or another. :shock::D

I thought CNC meant computer numerically controlled, that's what they tought me in tech. classes. Maybe they lied

I think you are right Tux, but I think the term "Computer Navigated Cutting" fits better (even if it's wrong). But then I can't claim to be any kind of expert in the area, let alone know all that much about it. I do know I saw them cut cool motorcycle wheel rims out using a CNC machine on a show called "American Chopper" (it's one of my favorite shows). I also see many job openings in the newspaper for people with CNC experience. Can it be used for something other than cutting things out?

You can do routing I belive, but that's just cutting with a different Z axis when you think about it.

Middleburn make some nice CNC trials bike cranks, not that its relevant at all
