Server wuz down with hard drive problems...

Postby Void Main » Fri Jul 18, 2003 5:25 pm

Sorry about the down time today. Byrdman called me today and said the web site was down. I called my son but he said everything looked good. I could have probably talked him through rebooting and checking to make sure it came up ok but I wasn't sure what the problem was so I waited until I got home from work. I thought it was probably a power outage because we had some really bad storms today.

I got home and I see all kinds of ide reset failure messages on the console so it was a hard drive that appeared to just stop spinning (this is the second time it's happened). I shut it down, pulled the drive out and cooled it off a little and then started the system back up. Good old jounaled ext3 recovered and came right up. I suppose I should start looking around for another hard drive. Anyone have a spare 4 to 10GB IDE drive lying around they don't need any more? I usually have some extras but not at the moment.

I'm wondering if maybe a power surge caused the problems. According to my RRD graphs the thing went down right around 9:00am this morning which is when the first big bolts of lightning started to appear.

Who is Brydman?

If I was your son I could keep it running for you. And my parents wouldnt care less if you took me (just ask them, I will supply contact details).

One geek to a good home?

Maybe I will ebay myself.

Void I have one I could send you, but it would cost me about twenty pounds to ship it over the pond and since they aren't even worth that much I don't think it would be a good idea. Sorry.

I'm sure you will find one closer to home though. Good luck :)

ps. I (and no doubt everyone else) is very grateful for the time and effort you put into setting up and maintaining this place, and more importantly the time you spend answering our queries.
Anyways, 'nuff ass-kissing, *manly pat on 'yer back*

pps. When did you start using words like 'wuz'. I've never seen your language so slack :D :D

Only a slacker would have a web site that doesn't have close to 100% uptime capability so when my site went down I was feeling like a slacker and decided to talk like one. :)

I am byrdman. X11
Right here. (wave)
I used to be a micro$oft fan until one day, VoidMain slipped in our building and slapped me upside the head with the GNU GPL. When the stars left from spinning around my head, he responded to every project we had going, with, "I can do that for free!"
and I said, "But I have my MCSE!"
(got slapped again!) (he got paid, M$ didn't)
Now, after countless phone calls and emails of saying "how do you do this?", and "how do you do that?"...
I am proud to say that I am a pretty good intermediate linux phanatic.
(No person or persons were hurt during the making of this script)

BTW, Void, I am sure we have a HD you could have!! We'll do a chevy's and I will bring it...

And if that don't work out, I've got an OLD 6GB thing sitting around, however I think it is roughly 5K drive speed, so I don't know if it is fast enough for your needs, still if you need it let me know.

Yeah, you gotta watch those MCSEs, or Minesweeper Consultant Solitaire Experts as Calum likes to say. :)

The current drive is nothing special, according to "hdparm -I /dev/hda":
Code: Select all
/dev/hda:

ATA device, with non-removable media
        Model Number:       WDC AC35100L
        Serial Number:      WD-WT4131110517
        Firmware Revision:  14.10R11
Standards:
        Supported: 4 3 2 1
        Likely used: 4
Configuration:
        Logical         max     current
        cylinders       10672   10672
        heads           15      15
        sectors/track   63      63
        --
        bytes/track: 57600      bytes/sector: 600
        CHS current addressable sectors:   10085040
        LBA    user addressable sectors:   10085040
        device size with M = 1024*1024:        4924 MBytes
        device size with M = 1000*1000:        5163 MBytes (5 GB)
Capabilities:
        LBA, IORDY(can be disabled)
        Buffer size: 256.0kB    bytes avail on r/w long: 22     Queue depth: 1
        Standby timer values: spec'd by Standard
        R/W multiple sector transfer: Max = 16  Current = 16
        DMA: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 *udma2
             Cycle time: min=120ns recommended=120ns
        PIO: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
             Cycle time: no flow control=160ns  IORDY flow control=120ns
Commands/features:
        Enabled Supported:
           *    READ BUFFER cmd
           *    WRITE BUFFER cmd
           *    Look-ahead
           *    Write cache
           *    Power Management feature set
           *    SMART feature set

And it's not screaming on this cheapo budget machine:

Code: Select all
# hdparm -t /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in 17.78 seconds =  3.60 MB/sec
[root@nitro root]# man hdparm
[root@nitro root]# hdparm -tT /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  4.66 seconds = 27.44 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in 20.92 seconds =  3.06 MB/sec

So Byrdman, if you have an old ~6GB drive lying around the shop, I'll buy you lunch at Chevy's in exchange for it. :) If that don't work out it sounds like I can work out a deal with Linux Frank.

And regarding Byrdman's GPL comment I have to say that I started a new job a few weeks back and I got lucky enough to be able to spend most of my day hacking up open source projects. That's about all I have done for the last 3 weeks. I'm loving it!

Thanks guys!

Well, today I traded lunch for a hard drive with byrdman so as soon as I can schedule some down time on the server I'll stick the new drive in. :void: I believe I will leave the old one in and just mirror them so either one could fail hard and I'll be able to keep the site up (or get it up quickly afterward).

Thanks for the donation byrdman!
