irda (Infrared port)

Postby Void Main » Tue Dec 23, 2003 5:16 pm

Does anyone use the IR port on their laptop in Linux? I haven't really messed with it but last night I got to thinking it would be cool to control the TV and other things via my IR port. Apparently you can capture your remote control codes and use them with the "lirc" app. Problem is, I don't know enough about it and I don't think my IR port is being detected properly on this Compaq laptop. Anyone have any experience with it that they can share and give me some pointers that might get me going?

I don't like to post when I have effectively nothing to say.

But, no I have no experience with IrDA. I'd hazard a guess that X11 does.

Its been a long time since our LUG meeting. But we did try out something like this. We put together a IRDA receiver from some old components...Then installed the LIRC drivers and used xmms for the demo. The remote was some TV remote. I have only one serial port on the mobo and didnt pursue it any further.

Btw, controlling xmms via a remote was fun..
