Low disk space again

the perils of an 11 gig drive and no way to get files onto the machine with the CD burner other than using zip disks!

Code: Select all
[calum@claudia calum]$ df
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda6             2.8G  2.6G   71M  98% /
/dev/hda7             1.9G  1.9G   60M  97% /home
/dev/hda1             1.1G  1.1G   44M  96% /mnt/dos
/dev/hda8             5.1G  5.0G   66M  99% /mnt/winhome

well, misleadingly, /mnt/dos and /mnt/winhome are filled almost exclusively with wav, ogg and mp3 files recorded off of tapes of my music over the years, so are less easy to free up than you might think! in fact i don't really ever boot into windows (in fact i couldn't given it needs tons of free space to run) and only use those partitions as extensions of my home directory!

as for ethernet, that's what i want buthave been waiting for my network card for over a month now. i won't be buying from dell again...

I can't imagine buying an Ethernet card from Dell. What kinda deal did they have? Heck you can pick up cards for less than 10 bucks (USD), even in local stores here. Don't you have any local computer stores with good deals? Of course it's still worth it to check for Linux support before actually purchasing one.

i checked out linux compatibility first, no problem apparently (can't remember the model number right now), i think it cost me about £7.50 in total (probably just over ten US bucks) all the other places had about 8, 9 or 10 quid for the same item, but i think i might learn my lesson now. my flatmate works at PC world (so could have got me a 10% discount) and even though the discount would still have been slightly higher than what i am payingm i would have got the card instantly.

so far 4 phone calls and 7 pieces of junk mail and i still haven't got my card... however now i look like this:
Code: Select all
[calum@claudia calum]$ df
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda6             2.8G  2.2G  486M  82% /
/dev/hda7             1.9G  1.6G  326M  84% /home
/dev/hda1             1.1G  1.1G   44M  96% /mnt/dos
/dev/hda8             5.1G  4.5G  547M  90% /mnt/winhome

due to studious use of zip disks.

Sounds like your flatmate should get you a card using the 3 finger discount.
