Working on the new SCO Corporate Anthem...

Postby s_PeePs » Fri Jan 23, 2004 2:14 am

So far, all I got is the chorus:

So bye bye, Mr. Darl McBride
Drove your Lexus to the courtroom,
Thought you'd give it a try.
But all us geeks kept running Emacs and Vi
Singing "Darl, boy you shouldn't have lied",
"Darl, this turkey won't fly."

Any suggestions for possible verses? Perhaps something about "And as I watched him on the stage, my hands were clenched in fists of rage..."

A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that Linux used to make me smile
but I knew if I had my chance, that I could make investors dance and maybe they'd be happy for a while.
But February made me shiver, with every law suit I delivered, bad news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step.
I can't remember if I cried, when I read about young Darl McBride, but something touched me deep inside, the day, the SCO exec died.

And we were singin'
bye bye, Mr. Darl McBride
Drove your Lexus to the courtroom,
Thought you'd give it a try.
But all us geeks kept running Emacs and Vi
Singing "Darl, boy you shouldn't have lied",
"Darl, this turkey won't fly."

Tee hee, that happens to be a song I am very familiar with as I played lead guitar/vocals on that particular one in the last band I was in. It was obvious which words needed replacing with what and didn't even require thought. I'll leave the next verse for someone else... :)

Oops, I just relized I have a little problem in my verse. The first line should end in "smile" not "cry" although I think I used "cry" as it seemed to fit. It doesn't rhyme with "smile" however. So I guess I'll change it from cry to what it should be "smile" as I think it still could fit if you look at it from the right perspective. It's a little odd how the perspective changes throughout what we have already though... For those that don't know the song that we are cobbling up it's Don McLean's American Pie:

Awesome, Void! Check out this new version, built on your excellent idea of a first person narrative.

A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that Linux used to make me smile
but I knew if I had my chance, that I could make investors dance and maybe they'd be happy for a while.
But February made me shiver, with every law suit I delivered, bad news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step.
I can't remember if I cried when the board called for my tender hide , but something touched me deep inside, when my delusion died.

They were singin'
bye bye, Mr. Darl McBride
Drove your Lexus to the courtroom,
Thought you'd give it a try.
But all those geeks kept running Emacs and Vi
Singing "Darl, boy you shouldn't have lied",
"Darl, this turkey won't fly."

In my opinion, "The Ballad of Darl Mc Bride" should be freely revisable and redistributable under the termps of the GPL...

Void, you wrote half this song (not counting the part that was written by Don McLean)... do agree?

I was thinking about having my company (Void Main Industries) seek a lyrics patent on it. :) Actually it is Don McLean's song. I don't think anyone but he has the right to relicense it. It is his intellectual property (now I feel dirty) and by us changing it and redistributing it we are doing what SCO claims IBM has done to Linux. :) But then I think with songs it is a little different. Weird Al writes song parodies all the time. I don't know what the rules are on that and if he has to get permission to do it or not. I don't think there's any harm in us rewording it as a joke on a forum though.

I noticed you changed the last line of the verse I added. I do like it better but I'm thinking it would be even better if "board" could be replaced with something along the lines of "SEC". I know that does't fit but something on that line would be more appropriate since his board is just as much in on the pump and dump as Darl himself.

Sure they are... for now.
Damn that was a fast rply, almost like AIM... anyway, forget the GPL, I just want to circulate it and invite people to contribute new verses...

I'm sure you can figure out a way to work in the SEC

By the way, I am typing this in an unheated apartment, the temperature outside is roughly zero, and I can see my breath... hard to type accurately while shivering... :(

That would suck (the cold)! Here's what I'm working on so far for the next verse but it's not quite there:

Did you write the I-O-C-T-L
And do you have faith in the GPL
If sir Richard tells you so?
Now do you believe in pump and dump?
Can Judge Wells save your skinny rump?
And can you teach me how to lie real slow?

EDIT: Added links for flavor.
