cms advice gratefully solicited

Postby Calum » Fri May 20, 2005 12:51 pm

hiya.
i have this small website at www.polytheism.org.uk - now it has a static (well, more or less, there's a random quote script that puts a random line from a particular text file on some of the pages, and i would like to keep that if i can, currently it only works if the page it is on uses extension .shtml ) site, and a phpBB forums.

X11 has mentioned to me that i need a CMS and this echoes my concerns, i already overhauled it a little last year to try and make it a bit more sensible so i could maintain it easier, but it's not easy enough (or i am too lazy) so i need a CMS.

i know (of course) nothing about them, i found these two lists of CMSs and Frameworks (???): http://ongetc.com/index.php?option=com_ ... 7&Itemid=4
http://ongetc.com/index.php?option=com_ ... 5&Itemid=4

but i know nothing about them! i want to pick one that's small and simple. and i would like not to have to totally try out tons completely blind and possibly have the site down a lot and use up a lot of my time (which is a bit tight at the moment). so, does anybody know what to look for in a cms? and what to expect? what limitations to expect too? have a quick look at my site if you want and let me know what sort of qualities i should look for or avoid please, based on my humble simple little site.

I don't need a lot of shoutboxes, blahboards, mumblemodules, whatever, or those damn side columns!!! unless this stuff enables me to emulate what i already have on the site, basically i'd like a fair estimation of what i already have, but in a CMS.

anyway, thanks for reading this far, and thatnks for whatever you guys respond. i appreciate the benefit of your experience!

and remember i know nothing! nothing!

http://wordpress.org/

GPL. MySQL, PHP (which you clearly already have). Takes about 15 seconds to set up. Works well. Lots of design templates available, and the editing system is pretty good. Plus, they are pretty helpful, compared to some developers.
