Webmin failed to get the version of your samba server

Postby ludavic » Thu Jun 30, 2005 10:30 pm

Hi i installed webmin-1.210-1 into my server just installed with Fedora Core 4. Once I logged into the webmin and clicked on the samba module i got this:

"Webmin failed to get the version of your samba server executable
/usr/sbin/smbd."

I search around for a solution and most of it had to do with altering index.cgi in etc/webmin/samba/. However, I found out that that file doesn't exist in the current version of webmin or either that I can't find it .

thanks in advance for any help... :D :(

Works fine here. Do you actually have Samba installed?

This is what I have:

$ rpm -qa | grep samba
samba-common-3.0.14a-2
samba-client-3.0.14a-2
system-config-samba-1.2.31-1
samba-3.0.14a-2

Config file /etc/webmin/samba

Postby ludavic » Sun Jul 03, 2005 9:41 pm

Hi void main,

here is my config file in the samba directory in webmin:-

samba_server=/usr/sbin/smbd
samba_status_program=/usr/bin/smbstatus
name_server=/usr/sbin/nmbd
net=/usr/bin/net
stop_cmd=/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb stop
smbgroupedit=/usr/bin/smbgroupedit
samba_password_program=/usr/bin/smbpasswd
sort_mode=0
smb_conf=/etc/samba/smb.conf
start_cmd=/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
smb_passwd=/etc/samba/smbpasswd
text_lists=0
run_from_inetd=0
list_printers_command=lpc status | grep "[A-z0-9]:" | sed -e 's/://g'
swat_path=/usr/sbin/swat
dont_convert=-499

Is it incorrect in anyway? because I checked through it and it was ok.

That looks exactly like my config. What does this command output:

$ rpm -qa | grep samba

Man, I just can't duplicate your problem. I am running FC4 with the same Samba version as you, removed webmin and made sure there were no lingering config files and then freshly installed the RPM from the webmin web site. It works just fine for me. How do I get so lucky?

What do you get when you run these commands:

Code: Select all
$ /usr/sbin/smbd -V
# rpm -V samba samba-client samba-common

$ /usr/sbin/smbd -V

Version 3.0.14a-2

$ rpm -V samba samba-client samba-common

S.5....T. c /etc/samba/smb.conf
missing /var/cache/samba/winbindd_privileged

I guess about the only thing I can suggest is to get on the webmin mailing list and ask for help there. There is also a bug tracker that you might be able to submit your problem to. I don't see where anyone else is having problems and I can't duplicate it. Everything looks right that I have seen so far.
