Cable Network Down

Postby Void Main » Sun Feb 16, 2003 9:10 am

My cable was out for the last 12 hours. I guess it must have had something to do with the snow/ice storm that came in last night. I think that's the longest stretch I've ever had since having cable. Just thought I'd let you know in case you were trying to get here and couldn't.

I might be bringing the system down tonight for about 2 hours as well. I thought about mirroring the site on another machine so I could bring one down and work on it but I don't get enough traffic to go to that much trouble (yet). I plan on "attempting" to shoehorn in the 2.5.61 kernel with my new uptime patch and script. Should prevent it from rolling back to zero here in the next few days. Sorry for the inconvenience. If it works I'll make the patch and script available in my files section.

I have no control over my cable company. I warned that this could happen being on my home connection. Maybe someone could donate a server and some bandwidth in a real facility for me to move this to (yeah right). Anyhoo, this is nothing more than my playground.

Nice to see you ask, In my area i cant get cable (well the block down can but the cable company is slack). However with melborne wireless, its not direct internet but a wan, what I might be doing is getting a T1 and sharing it with a few people. And if this site is on home cable im sure you would have no issues with it on a shared T1. Mind you this could take some time, because there is a lot to do with wireless WAN connections.

Actually I was doing some work today at a company who has a T1. I also have servers on a T1 and I have this Void site on my home Cable connection. I visited all my sites and this Void site seemed the fastest of all of them. I do have the "Gold" service but still my upload speed is only supposed to be around 256k (maybe it's 512k, I don't even remember but it's more than enough for a dumb web site like this). I believe I pretty much have this whole cable segment to myself. Guess I could throw my sniffer up and figure out how many others are on the segment. :)
