Configure and run DNS on Core 2

Postby ZiaTioN » Wed Sep 21, 2005 12:08 pm

I am interested in hosting my own pages like I used to back in the day. However when I did this I always had the registrar also resolving the URL's. I would like to do the resolution myself on my own Core 2 box. Does anyone know of any decent turorials on how to set this up? Also my machine is behind a NAT and firewall device. Would it be possible to have this DNS server listen on the internet from behind this NAT and firewall device?

Yes it can be behind a firewall. You really wouldn't want to do it on a home connection though unless it's a very reliable connection and definitely needs to be on a static IP address. Setting up and running DNS is extremely simple. You can pretty much use the default configuration and just add a zone with your host records.

I have a tip for setting up dynamic DNS and DHCP which would have a sample of a zone:

Just ignore the DHCP and dynamic parts. You could also use the graphical DNS tool to set up your zone. Here's the FC4 manual for the graphical tool:

FC2 also came with a system-config-bind graphical utility if I recall.
