What exactly is the difference between the Internet port and the 4 regular ports on the back of a WRT54G?

Nothing other than being in a different VLAN. All the ports are identical and just part of a 6 port switch (the 6th port being hard wired internally to the ethernet interface). You can reconfigure the VLANs however you want but by default they put one in it's own VLAN and call it the Internet port. They put 4 in their own VLAN and call them the LAN which gets bridged with the wireless interface.
