Lovely neighbour...

Postby Jenda » Sun Mar 25, 2007 5:14 pm

Well, I just found out some neighbor nearby has a WiFi... He doesn't encrypt it... He has the default settings on the router...

Should I help him?

(It's very snappy, too ;) 2M)

I would tell them about it and tell them that they need to run encryption or they are leaving themselves vulnerable to some very bad things and if someone were to use their network for bad things they will get blamed for it.

Well, there are a couple of ways. You can home in on their router with a laptop and kizmet keeping an eye on signal strength. Or you could cross the line a little and look at the packets captured by kizmet and load them up in ethereal (wireshark). It shouldn't take to long to get a key piece of information pointing out who this is (email address, machine names, ssid, etc). But you are in somewhat of a gray area there. You aren't actually connecting to his wireless network when you do this, he's actually spitting that information out into the airwaves for anyone to see. It's like changing your clothes in front of your picture window with no curtains. People are going to see you naked.

homing in on them with the laptop would seem doable, but you know, it's rather hard, considering he's probably in the next apartment building, and I can't get in there :)

You could just connect to his network and send a Windows popup message via the Samba client that says "hey dummy, stop looking at all that porn!!" :)
