permissions problem

Post by cdhgold » Thu Dec 17, 2009 8:45 pm

i know i'm overlooking something simple.

I have a folder /mnt/data/Pictures/album I want to give my wife read only access to I have set its group to data which she and I are both members of as secondary group .. I'm the owner of the files

the permission of the folder are
drwxrwS--- 120 cdhgold data 4096 2009-12-13 10:57 album

but get
[cmbgold@whiskey ~]$ ls /mnt/data/Pictures/album
ls: cannot access /mnt/data/Pictures/album: Permission denied

permissions were set by
chmod -R 2760 /mnt/data/Pictures/album

any suggestions? what am I overlooking or forgetting?

If you didn't log off and back on you wouldn't be in the group (type "groups" to verify you are in the group). The only other possibility is that you do not have at least execute permission on every subdirectory in the chain leading up to that subdirectory.

the cmbgold user does not ..what is the easiest way to grant that for the group I only want cmbgold to be able to access

/mnt/data/Pictures/album

What are the permissions on each of these directories:

/mnt
/mnt/data
/mnt/data/Pictures?

Like I said, in order for anyone to be able to see files in /mnt/data/Pictures/album they would also have to have at least execute ("x") permissions for each of the above directories.

issue resolved
a) i added the execute at above levels
b) i thought user had logged since since adding group . had not so group permissions were not affecting logged user out and back in
C) changed permissions to chmod -R 2751 /mnt/data/Pictures/album and created user symlink under /home/cmbgold/Pictures album to /mnt/data/Pictures/album

now she can see everything under /mnt/data/Pictures/album only but not write or delete from folder which was the goal

thanks void for jogging my brain
