tomsrtbt was mentioned recently, i just found out about FIRE though, it's a bootable linux CD with a ton of recovery stuff on it, i haven't looked at it properly yet (and i probably don't have much use for it myself) but i suspect it would function well as a firewall or whatever too. looks good.
of course tomsrtbt will always be needed for machines whose hardware won't run or boot a CD based linux.
