A quick question about Samba

Postby edwardsen35 » Mon Jun 16, 2003 8:20 pm

When I view the network servers in Nautilus I get the following error:

Couldn't display "smb:///", because Nautilus cannot contact the SMB master browser.
Check that an SMB server is running in the local network.

I thought smb was running so I ran "ps aux" and I found this line:

USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
root 2901 0.0 0.7 5784 2028 ? S 15:01 0:00 smbd -D

What am I doing wrong?

If this is a difficult question then don't bother trying to answer it because I haven't read the Samba How to. I plan on reading it this weekend if I haven't figured out what is wrong by then.

Thank You.

What is the "netbios name =" setting in your /etc/samba/smb.conf? If it's not set to anything then it should match the hostname of your machine (type "hostname"). Try connecting directly to the name rather than trying to browse using "smb://servername". If samba is running and configured you should get a prompt for a username and password depending on how you have Samba configured. If you type in a valid username/password then it should display a list of shares on the server. You should also be able to browse the workgroup or domain by using the "smb://workgroup" URL. That should give you a list of servers in the particular workgroup.
