That's odd, I don't recall seeing that naming convention before. Maybe they did it with 2.4 as well but that was some time ago and my old old brain is rotting away......

Wonder how long it will be before it goes final? I figure around 2.6.8 is when we'll start seeing a slew of new distros with the new kernel.

No they didn't do it for 2.4 as far I know, but I think this is due to Linus' desire to make this a real good 'un (well he always does that) and I suspect he wants to make his year-long sabbatical type release from Transmeta worthwhile for all.

Oy yeh, I forgot to say, this is a lie and they did do it for 2.4 :D
