openoffice memory

Postby Linux Frank » Wed Sep 24, 2003 4:57 pm

I was playing around with speeding up open office. I removed the splash screen, and was setting up more memory, but I hit a limit that can't be beat. OO assigns itself around 9MB, and I increase this a few Megs. and get a doubling of the speed (10 secs to start), however I can't get it faster. For giggles I gave it 82MB, and it makes no real difference to the startup time. So I was wondering. Does Linux set a limit on how much memory any user can have with any specific application, and if so where is that limit and how can I increase it?

The system is used for surfing the net and basic wordprocessing / spreadsheeting tasks, and I would like to make the OO go like lightening, as it is a major function.

Thanks in advance for any info or tips.

Were both tests performed right after a fresh reboot or did you open OOo initially so the shared libraries would be loaded for subsequent tests? If you start OOo right after a boot it will open much slower than subsequent openings. For instance, on this laptop it took around 20 seconds to bring up writer the first time, and less than 10 seconds the second time. Wish I could answer some of your questions directly. Luckily on my desktop it only takes a few seconds to load OOo apps and I have no need to make it any faster.

Regarding user memory limits there is "ulimit" but yours is probably set to unlimited. See "ulimit -a" to list your limits. How much RAM do you have?

Okay,

first start 24 secs. after that 10secs.

After playing with memory I can get startup of around 10secs. and then repeat starts are 10secs. never faster. This is why I wondered the reason.

Mem = 192MB, however I think my processor may limit too much. It is 450MHz, AMD.

I would be happy with 10 seconds on an AMD 450 with 192Mhz of RAM. I am quite impressed that you actually got it working that fast. I have an AMD K6-2 450 w/192MB and it's a complete dog. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't take 30 minutes to load OOo on it. :) My desktop on the other hand is an Athlon 1600 w/512MB and a GeForce with the optimized X drivers and it just plain screams. My Compaq Laptop is a 1Ghz PIII w/256MB and it's not much faster than your times on your AMD 450. In fact the first start is a little slower but subsequent starts are a little faster on my laptop.
