My own little TIVO??

Postby xyle_one » Sat Nov 08, 2003 9:23 pm

A freind of mine is interested in building a linux box to basically act as a tivo? My question, first of all, is this possible? And if it is, what would be the difficulty level in doing something like this. His goal is to be able to login remotely to start recording something, and to be able to automate some recording tasks. I am going to do some searching for some info, i just thought that this would be a good place to ask.

Thanks.

(Is this the correct section for this question?)

I was just reading about something like this about a month ago. It seemed to be pretty mature but I can't remember off the top of my head where I read about it. I'll have to do some digging. The guys goal was to build an affordable TIVO like system and he had pictures and everything. I'll try to do some googling after I get this server upgraded. System may be down for a short while depending on how the upgrade goes.

i found freevo, as well as MythTV. Freevo looks promising.

Looks like the upgrade went well. i saw the message, then hit refresh. site was up.

Heh heh. Well, I actually was just testing the redirect and haven't actually upgraded yet. But I hope to only have to redirect for about that long while I reboot. I'm just about ready to start. Been getting fresh backups of the databases etc (just in case)...

thanks. That was a pretty good breakdown. I think i will give both Freevo & MythTV a shot. Im actually, more concerned with which distro to use now :P

Something lightweight, with little overhead.
