synaptic wiped kde

Postby caveman » Fri Dec 05, 2003 5:57 pm

Hi.

Been using apt and synaptic for a while now without any problems,
that is until tonight.

Started synaptic, checked for upgrades and it came back with some actions needed
before it could proceed.
I said ok - lets have a look - and it said its gonna remove 59 packages??????
Stopped the thing, did some reading, couldn't find anything about this and tried again.
Same result - so I thought - lets try it - looks like it'll only remove the old installs.
BOOM - it went and removed ALL of KDE and some other stuff. Now I can't find a log of what was removed.

I'm still logged into my KDE session, from where I'm running this Mozilla session -
but no KDE progs will start (seeing it ain't there anymore)
What exactly is the story, and how am I now going to get the stuff back, without
knowing what was removed.

Bloody hell - then tried up2date and it said I don't need anything and all is up to date.

Anybody have this happen to them?

Right now I don't know whether to laugh at myself or just go out and kick the dog,
he might even put up a fight!

And yes - I do NOT have a system backup younger than about 5 weeks!

Never had that happen. I have both KDE and Gnome installed on several of my machines and I do "apt-get dist-upgrade" daily on all of them. Do you only have FreshRPMS repositories in your /etc/apt/sources.list? I have had a problem in the past when I used several different repos and one of them had a bad package (not FreshRPMS).

The good news for you is that it shouldn't have removed any of your KDE configuration, reinstalling the packages should get you back to where you were. You could try the "Add/Remove Applications" and select all the packages under the "KDE Desktop Environment". Or you could try installing them all with apt. Here is a list of packages under that section:

kdebase
arts
fam
htdig
xinetd
desktop-printing
kdeartwork
kdepim
kdeaddons
kdenetwork
kdemultimedia
autorun
kdeadmin
kdegraphics
kdeutils
switchdesk-kde

You could copy paste this on a command line:

Code: Select all
apt-get install kdebase arts fam htdig xinetd desktop-printing kdeartwork kdepim kdeaddons kdenetwork kdemultimedia autorun kdeadmin kdegraphics kdeutils switchdesk-kde

Remove any package from the lits above that are already installed.

Hi.

Tx Void.

Busy installing those that I could think of using synaptic after doing a search for "kde".
It'll take some time and as soon as it is in I'll compare against the list you supplied.

Installed the 2.4.20-24 kernel on all my machines during the week without a problem.
Ran synaptic on my 7.3 machines tonight withour trouble.
Only the 9.0 gave me the creeps.

Worst of all - I was planning to make system backups of all the machines on Sunday.
