RH Term Server

Hi,

I've read you're tip on using RH8 as a term server using
XDMCP. I've tried to do this using Cygwin and cant get it to work, any ideas?

Do you get any errors? I had set up Cygwin a couple of years back and had no trouble. That was obviously connecting to an older version of Red Hat. You might try adding your client IP address to /etc/hosts on the Red Hat server. I might install Cygwin in one of my VMware sessions this evening and see if I have any trouble...

Hmm, I hope it was just your firewall causing the problem. I will update the tip to mention that. I should have guessed that would be the problem but I only use it on machine that are behind a firewall and do not have local firewalls configured. I just installed cygwin in a VMware Win2k session and just typed "X -query myservername" and it popped right up with a graphical login from my server with no problem. I am 99% sure I didn't change anything other than the two settings I mention in my tip.

Several ports, locally it uses UNIX sockets rather than TCP/IP sockets but XDMCP is port 177 tcp/udp. x11 is 6000, x11 through ssh 6010, xfs is 7100, and there might be a few that I am forgetting but I believe that is it:

Code: Select all
$ egrep "x11|xdm|xfs" /etc/services
xdmcp           177/tcp         # X Display Mgr. Control Proto
xdmcp           177/udp
x11             6000/tcp        # the X Window System
x11-ssh-offset  6010/tcp        # SSH X11 forwarding offset
xfs             7100/tcp        # X font server
