I have tried cleaning up my local rpms and reinstalling the apt rpm

My version is

Code: Select all
apt 0.5.15cnc3 for linux i386 compiled on Nov 26 2003 05:16:22

I have also noticed apt-cache also seg faults so i think the problem might be when apt-get forks apt-cache

what do you guys think?
I almost ready to start ./config/make/make install

Hmmm, I have seen similar reports although I have not experienced the issue myself.

Try getting the source RPM and rebuilding and force installing the new resulting RPMs. Here is the source RPM:

http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/ ... fr.src.rpm

Download it and do an "rpmbuild --rebuild apt-0.5.15cnc3-0.1.fr.src.rpm" which should put the new RPMs in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386. Install them with the force option ("rpm --force -Uvh rpm*"). It looks like that might solve your problem. Strange it never happened to me, unless it is happening because an updated library is needed that you don't have and I did because I was keeping up with my updates. It's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

i just had this problem, after installing red hat 8 and upgrading using apt from the 9.0 repositories. it looks like something to do with rpm since i get this same rude exit message when i try to install via rpm too.
in desperation my catch all fix was to try against hope to install red hat 9 directly from my CDs (last i looked CD1 was not working) and hey presto the gods are with me, success. now i have removed all but the freshrpms and dag's repositories from my sources.list.d directory and hopefully no more problems may arise.

incidentally, look here:
http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/
http://dag.wieers.com/packages/apt/

this guy's apt comes with a much nicer set of possible repositories in the default sources.list.d directory than the apt i had from freshrpms, all safely commented out but definitely useful to have these repositories to hand in case you don't feel like trawling the net when you want a new repository.

edit: well i just noticed void main already said all this!
