nVidia FX5700 TV out.

Postby insomnia » Tue Aug 03, 2004 11:53 am

I'd like to connect my nVidia card with my TV.
I browsed most forums and they all seem to do this on a different way.
Any recommendations?
Does their exist a good utility for it?
Is it only possible with "800x600"?

I'd say it would be wise to stick with 800x600 because the native resolution of a television set is poor.

Just tried yanc.
It coudn't find Xfree since I use x.org.

So I did:
# cd /var/log/
# ln -s Xorg.0.log XFree86.0.log
# cd /etc/X11/
# ln -s xorg.conf XF86Config

Now it starts, but with this error:
No TV-Encoder found. All TV-related contents will be deactivated.

...but that's the only part I need :(

Ps: I''ve never done this before, so I don't really know where to start...

Does that flashy new nvidia-settings program not do it for you?

Did you happen to ask on the nVidia forums? They have some pretty knowlegable people there:

I have an nVida card but I don't think it has TV capability.

From what I understood from the NVIDIA README(provided with the driver), I only need to edit my "Device" section.
So now it looks like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce FX (generic)"
Option "TwinView" "true"
Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B"
Option "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-50"
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "60"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "CLONE"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"
Option "MetaModes" "1024x768,1024x768;800x600,800x600;640x480,640x480"
EndSection

Before I try this(I never did this before):
1.Is their anything obviously wrong?
2.Do I really only need to edit the device section?
3.Can this blow up my new TV?

Thanks.

First thing you always do before you change anything in your XF86Config (or xorg.conf) is to make a backup copy. You also should know how to restore this file in the event that X stops working after your changes. Having said that, I have always found the information in the nVidia README to be very reliable.

I would assume if you have edited you Device section and they instruct then you should not have a problem. I don't know if the identifier (Videocard0) in your example is the sample name from the README or if it is really what was in your config file but I don't think you want to change that (keep whatever is in there now).

As far as it blowing up your TV, if you have RTFM then IMHO it is not likely but then IANAL so YMMV. :)

Just tried it.
*My TV didn't explode.
*I got a perfect TV image, but only in black and white.
*It turned off my monitor.

So, I'm finally getting started.
I only need colours and a working monitor at the same time.

Ps: This is fun ;)

I would think you should be able to find someone who has actually done it on the NV forums. Have you asked around there? I browse those forums a lot, especially before the last driver came out (the old drivers don't work with the FC2 kernels).
