errr... My clocking is running slowon Slackware.. if i set it to the correct time within a few hours its off by minutes. Does anyone know what causes this?

It wouldnt be the CMOS battery would it?

What I do is keep my system synced with ntp and then once a day sync the hardware clock with the OS. I haven't seen too many PC clocks that can keep time worth a darn on their own.

my clock will be losing about 5 minutes every hour... i would have to update with ntp at least twice an hour. I should check if my hardware clock is doing the same thing i suppose.

Actually if you are running ntpd it should keep your system in sync continually with the time servers (if you have it configured properly). It sounds almost like a 50/60Hz issue though. I don't know if that effects PC clocks or not, wouldn't think so because they run off of a battery. :)

More then likely it is your CMOS battery. Stick with ntp and you should never feel the fallout from a failing system clock.

Until your computer forgets what kind of hard drive you have, and you have to feed the BIOS made-up numbers just to boot the computer!
