FC3 and RunLevel 3

Postby Basher52 » Fri Mar 04, 2005 2:41 pm

I dont know if this is the correct place for this or if it should be in the FC3 forum :( If so... move it :D

anyways... Ive, once again, reinstall the system due to ANOTHER!!! HDD crash(better get newer HDD's :P) and this time using FC3.
I didn't "use" the SELinux, but i did install it in the warning thingy.

From this version, FC3, whenever I set the RunLevel to 3 and then trying to
use: 'startx', I only get the "default" X(some kind of basic windowhandler), but with this I cant do much(I know I can, but I "can't", if you get it :P)

I want the "original" KDE when I use 'startx'
Is there a parameter to startx I should use or can I config some nice little conf somewhere?

I did try some change, in the a 'conf' and by that I got another loginscreen.
I changed the line...:
'x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon'
in /etc/inittab by changing the 'prefdm' to 'kdm' and as far as I know
this changes the loginscreen to another manager; KDE

so, the question is, how can I use 'startx' to start KDE from RunLevel 3?

Try typing "switchdesk KDE" and then "startx".

Question

Postby kovax » Wed Apr 13, 2005 5:14 am

I have installed vncserver on my FC 3 box. Whenever i use vncviewer from another system i get the plain cygwin-like x session. How do i set that to put me in kde by default?
I have done the swithdesk kde command and it does nothing. i guess that I need to somehow make kde my default x windown session.
Thanks

Although this thread doesn't have anything to do with vncserver/vncviewer you can look at about the 5th post in this thread:
viewtopic.php?t=1407

You have to edit a vnc startup file under your home directory to have your window manager start when you start the vncserver. I explain it in that post.
