audacious audacity

Postby worker201 » Mon Jul 18, 2005 12:00 pm

When attempting to run audacity, I get the following error:
audacity: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libwx_gtk-2.4.so.0: undefined symbol: _ZTV11wxFileProto

according to apt, both audacity and wxGTK are both the most current versions.

Any suggestions?

I had this problem and I really can't remember how I fixed it.
Perhaps this will help:

[tux@mithrandir ~]$ rpm -qa | grep wx

Yeah, I think I got it figured. The reason there's an undefined symbol in that library is that it doesn't exist! Audacity actually requires 2.4.2, while the current release is 2.6.x. The wgx site has older versions, so I'm going to go ahead and do concurrent versions. Unless the configure options --enable-2.4 and --enable-2.2 actually work, then I just have to recompile.

This points out a flaw in the binary package system. I want my computer to say "hey, if you want that program, you're going to need that package rebuilt with these options - here, let me get that for you". I think such a system is possible, if someone wanted to take the time. Meanwhile, I continue to augment my packaging system with manual skill.

Heh heh. That's the way apt is "supposed" to work. It's the human element that introduces errors into the whole process.

This is becoming a pain. It won't make gtk2 packages. I now have libwx_gtk-2.4.so.0, but what I need is libwx_gtk2-2.4.so.0. Where is it? The configure flag --enable-gtk2 did absolutely nothing, as far as I can tell.

I'm assuming you are using FC4? I just downloaded audacity and all of it's dependencies from Fedora Extras and it works fine:
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/f ... as/4/i386/

Here's the files I got from there:

audacity-1.2.3-5.i386.rpm
libid3tag-0.15.1-3.b.i386.rpm
libsamplerate-0.1.2-3.fc4.i386.rpm
libsndfile-1.0.11-3.fc4.i386.rpm
wxGTK2-2.4.2-12.i386.rpm
wxGTK-common-2.4.2-12.i386.rpm

Now, why is wxGTK2 available from Fedora Extras, and not from the wx-widgets project? There must be something going on here that I don't know about.

Thanks for the link, investigating now.

Very convenient that all the wxGTK packages I needed were there. audacity is now up and running. Took me about 12 minutes to do what I needed to do, and 2+ days to get the app running in the first place. Ah, Linux!

It's my experience the more you go through this the faster you get at it. :)

Slightly OT:
I fell in love with audacity - I'm an easy catch - because it lets me slow down maniac-fast sax parts in various jazz pieces, thus letting me get down the melody. This is truly priceless.
