Basher, Far from it, but since I've been using Linux, about five years now, it's gotten so simple and reliable that I really don't have to know much any more. It just works and I just use it; at home, at work, for any computing needs I have :-) Maybe it's been more than five years, I started with RH...

startcom linux
HI All, I got a DVD with StartCom Linux on it in my June issue of Linux Format. It's a RHEL clone, and I installed it today. I'd heard of Whitebox Linux and, of course, CentOS, and have played with both in the past. But I'm quite impressed with StartCom. It's available at: http://startcom.org In add...

Thanks Void! I may end up going that route, though it seems a shame to have to do a full FC6 install, get all the updates to that and then another yum upgrade to get to F7. But looking at the bright side, I may need a free afternoon and a CASE of cold ones rather than just a 12 pack :-) I don't know...

Ya'know... I never made the mistake of crediting Microsofties with having a lot of intelligence, but this is proof positive that they are the stupidest creatures on Earth. Who or what other being could shoot itself in the head so many times and still survive :-) Either they have the thickest skulls ...

unable to install F7
Hi All, Well, a couple of weeks ago I cleared out a nice 80 GB partition on sda, downloaded and burned the F7 i386 DVD .iso. I sat down, happier than a pig in poop, with a cold 12-pack of LaBatts and a free afternoon, ready to do a nice clean F7 install. My joy ended about 30 seconds into the instal...

Hi All, Microsoft has lost and they know it. They're losing the server market to Linux. They're losing the browser war. Firefox is closing on what, 20% of browser share. Or is it 25%... it's hard to keep track. Microsoft is going to lose the .odf vs. .docx war, look at Mass., California, Texas, and ...

desktop effects
Hi All, I finally decided to give the AIGLX and Compiz 3D effects a try on my FC6. I'm running a 256 MB nVidia 7300 GS video card and have the latest Livna driver installed. If I type "desktop-effects" in a terminal window, I get the little dialog box that lets my click on the desktop effects button...

Voidmain, Thanks! I'll give that a shot tonight. If it were a simple power supply issue, that would be great, and I do have a couple of them kicking around. The CPU heatsink IS very dusty, and that's why I thought that I might have cooked that. I wasn't holding out a lot of hope of being able to get...

Hardware Questions
Hi All, I've had a lot of problems which at first I was blaming on FC6, but have narrowed down to hardware issues. I was able to install FC6 just fine on two other computers using the same discs that I was trying to install on my computer with, but kept getting weird errors on my computer. I did rep...

My situation has gone from bad to worse. I'm stuck in some sort of a dual boot hell :-) I bought a new hard drive, 80 GB was the smallest I could get and that's a lot bigger than I need, so I figured I'd fdisk it to create a backup partition (40 GB) and another partition to install a distro on. Sinc...

Voidmain, Thanks for the reply. It's been a busy weekend for things other than Linux but I *may* have found my problem. To see if the probelm was just with FC6 I tried installing SLED 10 on hdd and had more problems. That attempted install enede up hosing grub to where nothing would boot. I tried ru...

unable to install FC6
Hi All, Looks like most of you are already enjoying FC6, but there's no joy here. I downloaded the ISO's and went to do a "standard" clean install and had no luck. I've been dual booting this same computer (two hard drives, hdc and hdd) since I was running RH8/RH9 on it. Since then I've always insta...

Hi All, It's not often that I complain about Linux. I REALLY love my FC4/FC5 home computer and am happier than a pig in muck that I finally am using SUSE at work and never have to deal with the OS whose name should not be uttered. But you know, sometimes.... I had a long day at work today; over 12 h...

VoidMain, Actually, I was pretty lucky. It could have been a lot worse. I live in farm country and have a lot of good friends and my kids came out to the house to help. I was able to salvage a lot; things like my good MS250 Stihl chain saw, my 5 Kw generator, snow blower and wood chipper took on a l...

Hi All! It's been a heck of a summer weather wise. About three weeks ago I had a lightning strike close enough to my house, probably about 100' or so, fry my phone lines and my modems, both cable and regular. We could see where it struck, the steam was rising from the ground and all the grass got co...
