How to install Linux on an old Toshiba m70 laptop?

It currently has a Spanish language copy of Windows xp on it, and I'd like to install Ubuntu 18 (actually xubuntu since they still release an i386 image, and this laptop has a 32 bit cpu, I think). However this laptop won't boot from USB according to the bios options, and I have made a dvd-r of the ...

Re: Happy New Year :D

For a split second my brain was looking for the "like" button!

I forgot that back in the day of online forums you had to actually type your reactions out longhand!

Re: Android/Ubuntu mounting as USB storage device

Just a small update. In the end i gave up using MTP (though on the new phone it is slightly less slow and buggy, but not much).

I've bypassed it entirely and am now using this instead of a cable:

No real problems yet.

GRip

Since they stopped maintaining the package "grip" there hasn't been as good a GUI CD ripper on linux ever since. Someone told me abcde is as good, but seriously, the tickboxes and so on just made it so much easier imho. RipperX is shabby by comparison, and other options like audex require tons of KD...

Re: Android/Ubuntu mounting as USB storage device

it's buggy as anything though. Delete commands always unmount the device, and move commands can be relied on to unmount it after one to four files (1M photos) have been transferred. I am resorting to copying files, which works apparently, and then deleting them on the phone (instead of moving them i...

Re: Android/Ubuntu mounting as USB storage device

ok, so here are my adventures. MTP support is standard in ubuntus higher than 12, so i dist-upgraded to 13, then to 14.04. It took a day or two all in, but i used the GUI the whole way with no hitches, and it was easy, and it worked! Linux OSs have come a long way since i started using them 14 years...

Re: Android/Ubuntu mounting as USB storage device

thanks! that sets me on the right track, though i get lost when trying to detect the phone's VID and PID. I get a very long output (so piped it to less to get a look at it) and the first few lines show: Unable to open ~/.mtpz-data for reading, MTPZ disabled.libmtp version: 1.1.5 Listing raw device(s...

Android/Ubuntu mounting as USB storage device

Hi folks, I recently purchased a tablet PC, it connects to Ubuntu 12 no bother at all via the USB lead provided. You plug it in, click two buttons on the tablet, and it shows up as a mounted USB storage device in Ubuntu. Great! Now, i then got an HTC One mobile phone, with Android on it, plugged it ...

So, Google has chosen to brand its next Android release with the name of an existing registered trademark, owned by Nestle: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23926938 Interesting choice, since Nestle are so ruthless in their search for profit that they exploit a lack of education to aggressively ...

Re: Ubuntu Karmic BETA first look

well, i don't have a fancy schmancy computer, but i do use a GUI, XGCE, which i have been using since version 4 came out. However Ubuntu 11.04 tells me that if i upgrade to 11.10 that the intel graphics card in my creaky old IBM M50 desktop "might" not be supported. Fun and games. :-) PS - my better...

Re: Google rips off Linux GPL code for Android?

As far as I can tell Calum you're a consumer rights advocate in a consumption driven recession. All you care about is you. What about the developers? I might need a few patents, to secure a meal. I don't want a damn ration card! it's unfortunate that that's as far as you can tell, because i thought...
