Instead of using the "modem" symlink, just point minicom to /dev/ttyS0 directly. Voidmain, If I always did the logical, simple or obvious thing... Well I guess it's just not my way :-) BTW, using ttyS0 works perfectly. For some reason I had problems with it earlier and that's when I went to /dev/mo...

FC4 and udev?

Hi All, It's been a while, but I am having a little problem with my FC4 install. I have an external modem that I have to use to dial in to work with using minicom from time to time. Since I was having issues with it in FC4, I was either rebooting to FC3 or just recreating the symlink. I've googled t...

how has your Suse and NLD work been going? any updates? any thing I can help with? Cdhgold, Thanks for asking. I'm settling quite nicely into SUSE. There are a lot of things about Fedora that I like better like system-config-<whatever> as compared to YaST2 and also apt-get as opposed to YaST2. I'm ...

And here's the saddest part: http://www.theregister.com/2005/11/22/analysis/ Sony hasn't been hurt a bit by their actions. The windroids of the world just don't know or care enough to be incensed by Sony's actions. Kind of makes you wonder sometimes if there's any hope at all. They go out and buy Wi...

OK, I mananged to sort this out. I had to make a change to "you" telling to to go online instead of the CD's. Just a radio button in the GUI.

Should have been obvious

Mapping Novell Network Drives?

Hi All, Still working to get SUSE configured at work. Overall things are going pretty well, but I still have to set up connections to my 5 Novell network drives. Since my networking skills are limited at best, I don't even know how to start. I do know the following: 1) The filesystem type of the net...

Finally, Linux at work!!!

Hi All! After months of getting jerked around, I finally have Linux installed on my computer at work. For now I'm running OpenSUSE 10, dual booting with Win2K. The install was pretty straightforward, but I do have a questions about updating this distro. I went to the yast thing and asked it to do an...

dishawjp, I will never use YUM and I am still upset that it was chosen to be the core package installer when there was already a very fine and mature one out there (apt). I have to agree with you on that one! I do use yum on my court computer since I just use the default repositories and try to kee...

xorg fun :-(

Hi All, I've had a bit of fun recently on my FC box. It began with a damaged coax cable for my broadband connection which kept me off line except for my 56k modem for a few days. When I got that fixed a few hours ago, I did my updates and then the fun began. This: http://fedoranews.org/mediawiki/ind...

I've been watching this for a while on the Fedora development list. I've read that the people who developed Synaptic are the ones who've taken up the development of Smartpm. There's some talk of including it in Extras when FC5 comes out, but many are opposed to having yet another updater (along with...

NLD is Novell's enterprise desktop. It's not cutting edge and has fewer apps included. It's intended to be more stable and easier to support. It's designed for desktop use in a work environment. SUSE is more like Fedora, especially now with the OpenSUSE project going. More leading edge software, pos...

Worker201, The reason that I was given is that we're a Novell shop (Netware, Groupwise & etc.) and that Novell was SUSE/NLD, so that is the direction we were going to go. I guess that one of the big things was that the Groupwise and other Novell clients were built into NLD. I have no experience with...

The Tide Really is Turning!!!

Hi All, In the past, I've posted that the IT Department at the college I work for is a bunch of hopeless Windroids. About a year ago, my boss (the VP for Finance and Administration), who knew that I had been advocating switching to Linux, at least on our servers, asked me if RedHat was anything like...

Not sure if what I did is good, bad, or indifferent, but I wanted to have access to the Fedora Extras at freshrpms.net and be able to install programs like synaptic and all from apt. Maybe I am too impatient or lazy or whatever. I did an "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y" with the version of apt...

Thanks Voidmain, I'll give that a shot when I get home. Also, since it doesn't seem to be able to detect file system types properly, should I substitute msdos for auto in that field? Looking at the fstab man page, they seem to want msdos instead of vfat like the mount command wants. Any floppies I u...
