Voidmain, I think I'm getting closer, thanks to you. I should have checked dmesg a long time ago. It does appear to be loading the drivers OK: Linux Tulip driver version 1.1.13 (May 11, 2002) tulip0: MII transceiver #1 config 3000 status 7829 advertising 01e1. divert: allocating divert_blk for eth0 ...

mDNSResponder/dhclient

Hi All, Still trying to get my FC2 boot to connect properly to the internet. Still can't get a connection to a DNS server. I've been looking at dhclient and mDNSResponder thinking that one of them may be the issue, but really don't know much about either. I do know that when I boot to FC3, one of my...

Hi All, I finally got around to playing with this some more. I've googled this and have found several others with similar problems getting DHCP offers, but none with solutions that were of any help to me. I checked out my /etc/resolv.conf file, rechecked all me settings in "system-config-network" an...

Thanks Voidmain, I did shut down iptables and try again, though there was no joy. My /etc/modprobe.conf is loading the tulip driver for eth0, so I guess that should be OK, at least it's the same as in FC3. SInce I have to reboot between FC3 (to get onto the 'net) and FC2 to troubleshoot, I forgot to...

FC2 eth0 oddness

Hi All, Well, I wrote here a few days back that I needed to hose my machine because it had been running too well for too long, and all I really had to do was look around for a problem :-) My main computer is a dual boot FC2/FC3 machine. A while back I had some really serious issues with FC3, probabl...

Thanks Voidmain and Ice9,

I may take a closer look at Debian when I get some time to play around with it. Looks like a much better route for me in the long run.

Thanks Voidmain, Another option would be to look around for an extras apt mirror (I did a quick search and couldn't find one). The fedora.us one was the only one I was able to find. For now I guess I'll just grab individual .rpms from there and hope that one of the other repositiries (dag, dries, et...

Thanks Voidmain, I don't want to do *severe* hosage on my poor computer, but would like access to some of the "extras." Already, apt is an extra and in order to keep the size of the distro reasonable, a lot more packages are going to be removed from the core and into extras. If there are packages in...

It does look bad right now, but even MS is getting disgusted with the way patents are currently being issued. Take a look at this: http://www.theregister.com/2005/03/11/ms_patent_reform/ and this: http://www.theregister.com/2005/03/11/microsoft_clean_up_patent_business/ This software patent madness ...

Fedora Extras and apt question

Hi All. It seems that Fedora is moving more closely to yum all the time and gradually away from apt. Since I've always had good luck with apt and am familiar with its commands, I'd just as soon stick with it. But now I want to add Fedora Extras to apt and am not quite sure of how to do that. The dir...

Hey Worker,

That almost sounds like a plan. As a matter of fact, I still have RH6.1 kicking around. That would probably be almost as much fun as Mandy 6.0 :-)

Thanks for the suggestion!

Various (drunken) observations

Hi All, I haven't been around much lately and I didn't want you folks to think that the ONLY times I post here is when I manage to hose my system :-) Things have been real busy for me at both my jobs, but I got finished with my perl class tonight, figured I needed a few brews and would try to hose m...

Voidmain, I think the good old *NIX security model along with the good old tools like "console helper", sudo, etc are a happy medium for the general Linux using public (me). If you're the "general Linux using public" then what are all of us who have to keep running to you as we regularly hose out Li...

As many of you know, I've had more than my share of problems getting used to the SELinux policies and keeping things working properly. Without the help of this group, I might never have gotten some of them straightened out. But now both my oldest daughter and I are running it and, at least for the m...
