Hi Voidmain, Last night I was reading Worker's ntpd thread and did a bit of poking around on my computer. But it was quite late (we had our monthly LUG meeting and just HAD to stop for a few...errr several... oh heck... a whole lot of beers afterwards), so by the time I got home I wasn't really able...

Doh! I should have thought of that. I had to do that with the /dev/nvidia* files.

Thanks, that did it!

I was thinking that as a worst case, I could put something in my /etc/profile. But there has to be something strange going on if it's deleted every time I boot. It's not even a terrible problem, just one more weird thing with my system.

/dev/modem disappears at reboot

Hi All, OK, got another head scratcher. I finally got my modem up and running in FC3. I can connect to my ISP and use minicom to connect to my devices at work and everything is fine... except... At each reboot, my sym link (ln -s /dev/modem /dev/ttyS0) is lost and needs to be recreated. How do I set...

Calum,

Well, my youngest daughter ditched FC2 for Slack (Slack 10, I think) about 4 months or so ago, and has never looked back. She runs Slack and Mac OSX now and is very happy with both OS's. I think she still has FC1 installed on one of her drives, but don't think she ever boots to it.

Calum, Before you give up, try deleting the __db* entries in /var/lib/rpm and then running rpm --rebuilddb again. I do remember having this issue way back when and then being able to solve it. Also, and many might disagree with me here, yu might want to consider FC1 or FC2 over FC3. FC3 is nice, but...

Calum, I found this in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=86177 It seems to be more related to the rpm version than the kernel. There's also this thread: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2003-November/msg01395.html Also, if I remember correctly back with RH9, t...

As usual, Voidmain was right on target. I'm using my modem right now to post this. How do you know all this????? Not that I'm complaining, but you're amazing :-) More seriously, I bought a book today titled Troubleshooting Linux. If ever anyone has needed a book like that, it's me. I honestly do try...

And the good news is....... I replaced my CD burner, a MSI which worked well under all versions of RH8-FC2 with a new Memorex 52x32x52x model and it burns like a champ! As Voidmain suggested, the changes made to cdrecord used in FC3 must have created problems with my drive. I spent $49.99 at CompUSA...

I should have known it wouldn't be that easy. System-config-network is running. I selected to add an interface, a modem, and entered the ISP name and number, my username and password and all, went to activate the modem and got an error 2. It never found the modem. So I did a ln -s /dev/modem ...

IT WORKED!!!! Thanks Ice9 and Voidmain. I did the: apt-get install --reinstall glibc-common and now system-config-network is working. You folks are the best! Now, I went and bought me a shiny new CD burner to replace the MSI unit I've been running and which FC3 doesn't seem to like. If that goes as ...

Voidmain, Well, I tell you. I don't break it on purpose, but I do a heck of a job at it unintentionally. I have googled this fairly extensively and found some references, but few had resolutions and most were very specific to setting locale to Belorussian or customizing for multiple locales for diff...

FC3 system-config-network

Hi Again, I thought I was all set, but I guess not. About the last thing I had to do was get my modem configured and everything would have been good. Here's my most current problem. Trying to run "system-config-network" from the command line gives the following: [root@eunix etc]# system-config-netwo...

Thanks Voidmain, I'm back up and running again, but it wasn't much fun. I ended up reinstalling again, doing my updates and all, but somehow ended up with duplicates of a couple of dozen libraries. They were things like glibc, gstreamer, bash, krb5-libs, hotplug, shadow-utils, udev, and etc. I think...
