Problem might be that the daemon is not started? execute ps -ef|grep smb if the daemon is up you should get something like the following root 2335 1 0 Oct01 ? 00:00:00 smbd -D root 2337 2335 0 Oct01 ? 00:00:00 smbd -D if not - start it with /etc/init.d/smb start and make sure it is started as a serv...

apt and synaptic filenames

Hi guys. Have looked around but can't find an answer  Is it possible to set apt (specific synaptic) to use the filenames as is in the reposits and not add all those "%" "_" (percent and unserscore) characters etc? Don't know about you - but to me it is very frustrating to check filenames (I'm ...

motherboards 64bit

Hi. Begged, borrowed and stole enough money to think about building a 64 bit system. What I have in mind is something like a GIGABYTE AMD mobo, but, cannot make up my mind whether to go for the socket 764 or 939 platform. If a 764 then do I go for the Sempron or Athlon64 processor? Where I live, the...

Mozilla is "sticky"

Hi. Dunno if this should be in Redhat/Fedora, but seeing the problem is with Mozilla, I parked it here. Upgraded my FC3 box to FC4 about 2 weeks after FC4 was released. Since then I find my mouse to be "sticky" ie. it doesn't allways move when I expect, a) like the interrupts get lost b) something i...

Touche. One of by really pet hates with *nix "professionals". Few years ago I managed a system running on a Sun box, and the database permissions gave problems - so they changed everything to 777. I bitched and moaned, and was told to go far away (and I was sort of the DBA etc.) So I left. Some mont...

ahemm Yes - now that I saw Voids' reply.. The default is track-at-once and you have to change it to disc-at-once - Not hundred percent sure... but shall try and find out - that is if I can get hold of the guy that burnt the dvd. Just know that one of those settings doesn't do what you expect when bu...

Is the same type of problem I had (wasn't with Fedora though). Maybe this helps. The way the ISO is burnt onto the disc makes the difference. As I don't have a dvd writer, I asked a friend to burn it. He burnt it using Nero 6.?? on a winbloze machine - and it wouldn't boot, everything else was there...

Tried upgrading my laptop - a) it gave me some warnings - but these were off the screen by the time I noticed. b) It rebooted with fc4 - but there is no rpm, no apt, no yum installed??? any ideas on how t...

hidden thumbnails

Hi. Got a serious suprise on my system today. Been fooling around with security cameras and "motion" for the past 8 weeks or so. To check everything I list the motion default directory as thumbnails every now and then to check what the cameras are picking up etc. etc. I notices I'm losing a lot of s...

Must say.. :D

I did a double take on "keep it under 4 or 5 pounds if possible"
and my thought was "pounds" as in money, must be a typo,
until I realised it's the weight of the thing....

Shows where my mind was at the moment.
