Re: Lucid Lynx

hello everybody and happy new year. i recently changed to this distro, having become totally frustrated with fedora over the last couple of releases. So far, very few problems. Using XFce as my interface as usual, so far minor issues about moving stuff on the XFce taskbar, and that's about it. Most ...

thunar refresh issue

one other thing that annoys me, and i did google it, but came up with many irrelevant answers, perhaps my google is jinxed... is that in my nice new debian system the XFce desktop and Thunar do not refresh/update to show the current contents of the directory after another app alters them. example: i...

Sidux/Debian GNU/Linux

Hi all! well, i took ice9's advice about installing debian using sidux and i must say i haven't regretted it. thanks ice9! you haven't steered me wrong yet! sidux is a bootable live cd, very similar to knoppix, but it has an icon on the desktop which starts a very nice, easy to use graphical install...

thanks! well, i actually meant the classic ][e would pull the mp3s from a network location and play them, since its hard drive is too small to store the mp3s itself! i tried vector linux on our new PC (which is apparently called "michael", after the character in the lost boys!) for about a day. it's...

the laptop with OSX has actually died (or something to do with its power supply set up has died, but replaced power supply and died again within a week) so i haven't been able to try any more networking of the two. as i recall all i bothered to set up at the time was ftp in both directions and ssh i...

thanks, i think i will go with that recommendation, do you know i got banned from linuxquestions.org for asking this? actually i got banned because i didn't agree with moderator trickykid that people were mature enough to discuss their best distro choices in a meaningful way. (to clarify: he thinks ...

What's the best distro?

I love asking this question! anyway, i used fedora for years before recently turning to Mandriva 2008 only to find it is even more buggy and unpredictable than Fedora (which was: not much, but enough). Now. I plan to replace good old harvey the desktop machine because he's past it, to be frank, and ...

thanks guys, i ended up getting the bios string and finding out the model and downloading the manual with just google, but in the end it turns out my motherboard only supports CPUs up to 866MHz, which i think is rubbish, so it looks as though i have to buy a new PC, which isn't going to happen soon.

well i didn't look when i had the case open because it didn't occur to me there might be a compatibility issue (but isn't there always?), and i'll have to wait for a wee while before i can reboot and check the info from the bootup sequence because i'm in the middle of running a script to process som...

Motherboard overboard!

any idea how i can find out my motherboard's model so i can go and look for the manual online? i've bought a CPU that doesn't work, the supplier reckons i'll be charged all sorts of postage etc if it turns out to be working when it goes back to them so i want to check the motherboard manual first to...

nice of them not to sue people for making compatible software, looks like they finally realised that if anything interoperability helps them, unless they're prepared to admit that their products can't compete in the market that is.

gtk-gnutella - no hosts/nodes except pseudo UDP node.

hi there, i am using mandriva 2008 (which i changed from Fedora for several reasons) and have just installed gtk-gnutella via urpmi. my current version is gtk-gnutella/0.96.3-12293 (2006-11-09; GTK2; Linux i686) though i have tried several older versions all with the same problem, and each time i de...
