does the live dvd try to mount your linux partition at the point it is freezing? that's just an idle thought, and is probably not the case or i think you'd have mentioned it. If it was the case though, i'd try using a live-bootable disk that doesn't automatically mount your partitions. not much help...

from http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/NFS-HOWTO/server.html Second, it is a poor idea to export a FAT or VFAT (i.e., MS-DOS or Windows 95/98) filesystem with NFS. FAT is not designed for use on a multi-user machine, and as a result, operations that depend on permissions will not work well. Moreover, some ...

yes, happy holidays to everybody. most people seem to take christmas in some form here, people of many religions regard it as a nonreligious feast day i think. Hope you all had a good one. i didn't do any sun god, solstice, artemis or hannukah things this year, but we did go to the local church of s...

thanks for the reply and the links.

the first decent looking howto i found was for OSX and Ubuntu. it advised using smb since it's easy to turn on in both OSs, and it looked easy to turn on in fedora too!

will check out links, i really didn't have an easy time googling for it myself.

by the way there are plenty of legal downloads of music which are free. I often scour the web for a few free tracks from some band i have heard. Far and away my favourite place to go for that sort of thing though is archive.org i am sure you are aware of it, but thought it might be worth a mention, ...

networking: Fedora/Mac OS X

okay, one machine, harvey, has Fedora 6, and the other machine, octopus, has Mac OS 10.4. I have "switched on" samba, or windows networking or whatever it's called on both, using the various gui tools, as per various howtos. Nothing. putting smb:/// into nautilus shows nothing on the network. All i ...

how long is it till we get a user version of fedora 9? my scanner needs fedora 8 to work (well, the version of hplips is the one packaged for fedora 8 and if installing it on earlier versions it has a stack of fedora 8 dependencies...) but if there are "issues" then i would rather wait, especially s...

yes i believe telewest is now called "virgin media", which is what i have as well. ditched bt, and virgin media's service (not customer service, but the quality of the service they provide) does seem superior to BT to me.

probably, but without the fearmongering i think the millenium bug *would* have been a big deal.

also, i question bt's integrity, given that i have some contact with BT, and regarding this "greenfield" cable laying, i am less than convinced that they use the latest in optical fibre the whole time.
