it seems to me like knowing somebody in a department, and getting some hands on experience is the way to go. sadly i don't. i've actually stopped doing my degree since i am disillusioned with the whole computer career thing. might just do some other courses and get a not-named degree in general stuff.

USA to run out of Internet in three years' time

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/20/broadband_traffic_overload/print.html Apparently the USA's Internet usage demand will overtake the capacity of the actual network(s) by the next 3-5 years based on current spending plans. I had to chuckle at this section about BT (BT are the UK equivalent of A...

for some reason i find the second one funnier, possibly because the painter would have had to go out of his way to avoid the branch rather than just shove it off the road.

By the way, MoR, what is this project? i must slyly peruse those pdfs in my own time...

hmm, didn't expect it to be that simple. i usually usa xcdroast for burning CDs, tried the others but they all seem to lack functionality to me (but clearly not to the majority of others). But i had heard you need to import some key or whatever to burn DVDs in XCDRoast. basically it's just data DVDs...

DVDs

so what do i need to burn DVDs anyway then? I already have a DVDRW drive, but i've never used it to burn DVDs. I am sure there must be somebody here who's burnt off a DVD so what do i do. sorry, this may seem like an incredibly dumb question, but i don't mind if you don't! in the words of someone: "...

and i may be slow on the uptake but i get there in the end. i did originally think we were looking for something that changes the background periodically, which is not in gnome, but is in XFce and KDE i think. Anyway, for a regular background changer (yes, regular meaning "regular" not "average"!) h...

well, that's certainly a help, by the looks of it. [root@harvey ~]# service hplip start Starting hpiod: Starting hpssd: [FAILED] although that isn't the most helpful error message in the world. Any idea how i can get more info? i really have no idea which logs to look into.

HP Photosmart C5280 Scanning issues!

First of all, I'm using Fedora Core 6 (Zod, apparently, quite an unsettling name for an O/S) and uname -r gives this: "2.6.22.9-61.fc6" i just got a USB printer/scanner all in one thing. It's light years ahead of me, our last printer was just a laser printer, the likes of which i have been familiar ...

i was drooling over those pictures! Joe Dude, i play a lot of kinds of music, surely you must have heard some of it, well, if not zip over to calumsmusic.netfirms.com and also manurodriguez.iscool.net for a listen. That's not a real indication of my music though, it's about half of what i do, or wou...

it is fat32, and does support long filenames, i definitely get a fairly loquacious error message from gedit when i try to save any text file that exists on a vfat file system, and it says it can't create a backup file, i assumed it was something to do with the filename, and further assumed that was ...

no it doesn't, that would be nice. i think that comes "as standard" with XFce though, which is definitely superior to gnome in many ways. Why do i even use GNOME in fact, come to think of it, i was using XFce for ages. I think i changed to gnome purely so i could get the little area where you can mi...

sounds great, what i need for that i think is a flashy laptop, of course then i have to think about how to get a decent linux compatible sound card! in fact one main concern of mine is the fact that most (all?) sound cards appear to take those horrible little mini-jack inputs. i really need somethin...

so far just usual improvements to look and feel "polish"
in the last year or so, Poland's inclusion into the EU has meant a large number of Polish settlers in this country, so i would imagine this new Fedora 8 would be the perfect OS for them...
