I swear I read up on information and call up man and info pages like they are the holy grail. I think my brain is still adjusting to the opening up of possibilities that Linux offers me, so I slip a little here and there (trying to learn too much too quick). Thanks for pointing me in the right direc...

Well I did not know that. There is a difference between su and su -. Would it be possible for someone to explain this for me.

And when should I use su and su -. Does the dash release even more root commands and therefore should only be used when absolutely necessary?

And you could also try Vim book

Which is pretty good.

vi /home/user/file or vi /home/user/newfile will also answer your needs.

hdparm - missing?

Okay I wanted to play around with the DMA settings under RH 8.0. As mention on the Ogle site for less jerky play back. However I can get nothing on hdparm. I get a Bash shell error stating it cannot find that command. Does this sound familiar to anyone, or do I need to do something special to play w...

There is a lot of spec info in the link, but there is no config details. And there is no way I would even think of buying a computer on line without first seeing and testing it. It is possibly a very good deal, but I also don't need it. With something like this you'd want a proper connection, not wo...

I'm not too worried, I have been expecting an increase, it's been a year and five pieces of spam, and I use that e-mail address on all forums. The only reason I posted, was if everyone gets the same piece, then you would know.

Hi void, Just to follow through, I received an unsolicited e-mail today in the account I used on this forum. The e-mail, which I deleted and can't retrieve, was an offer for a digital camera. Now as I get spam messages basically never, I thought this a little strange. So I just want to know if anyon...

There is nothing wrong with books (from a self confessed bibliomaniac granted), but my advice - The ones that really payback are the reference texts. You know those that just list information. They give you the commands, their descriptions give you the references to Google. Maybe you'd be better off...

I use Yahoo and Lycos, as well as linuxmail, as long as you are sensible with your e-mail, like me, you should be relatively spam free (five in lycos and zero in yahoo since I set them up), unlike many other services where you are spammed from day one.
