I am trying to set up my own web/ftp/mail server behing a DynDNS name. I am trying to figure out why I get 'relaying denied' on every domain I send to that is not in my relay list. What do I have to do to allow auth users to send out to everyone without becoming a relay domain...
What distro is this on (FC5?) and what changes have you made to the stock configuration. The only files you should have to mess with are /etc/mail/sendmail.mc and /etc/mail/local-host-names. In the local-host-names you would just put your server name (e.g. byrdman.homeip.net) and in sendmail.mc comment out the line with the loopback address. I also add the masquerade stuff in the sendmail.mc. Now the error message would indicate that sendmail is actually configured to receive mail but the user you are trying to send mail to doesn't exist on the system. I'm sure you've checked this though. I haven't done incoming mail on FC5 yet so maybe something is different with the default configuration (I currently use FC4). I need to upgrade my mail server anyway, maybe I'll get time to do it tomorrow night.

I added a phpbb site, basicly copied your site for my daughter and started creating email addresses for her friends to send emails to. Once I did that, I started getting the 'user unknown' errors. I haven't had time today to look at it. I will be getting with you soon to help with the upgrades because I found that our two outside mail servers have the sendmail hole and need to be patched. When I tried to do an 'apt-get upgrade' I could not find a Redhat 7.2 distro....(yes they are on RH 7.2) So what the hell, let's upgrade...that is what I always say!! It's for my daughter, it was easy, and it was open-source!!!she is 8 and wanted a chat room!! I decided that this is what she will get. It is amazing what the kids are getting into nowadays. My youngest, who is 3 is already a wiz on my laptop...

I don't let my kids use Windows. :) They have grown up completely Windows free. My daughter is graduating from high school this year and got a 75% scholarship at the college she's entering afterward. Linux must not have screwed her up too bad. :) Too bad Linux wasn't around when I was a kid! :) I don't allow any outbound traffic (blocked at my firewall) from their computers without going though the proxy (Squid + DansGuardian + AdZapper).
