That is the now legendary lack of multimedia support youget with Fedora, Suse and anyone else caring about licenses.
You only have to install the mp3 codec, dunno if it still is available but back in the days I used to be able to apt-get install it pretty easily ...
I use xmms to play MP3 and OGG files but you'll need to install the MP3 plugin for it to play MP3s since MP3 support is not included by default (it's not royalty free). Just install the xmms-mp3 package and use xmms to play your MP3s.
