Hmmm, I don't use the Add/Remove programs thing. I have always used apt (thanks Debian). I also don't use Samba (no need since I don't use any Windows garbage). I liked FC5 but I think FC6 kicks it's butt. Having said that there is certainly nothing wrong with switching to Debian. If Fedora ever does anything as dumb as SUSE just did I would be 100% Debian instead of just a fraction. I have been threatening to move 100% to Debian for a long time now and it really is a better fit for my "philosophy". Fedora is probably right behind it as far as "Free" goes though. That was again apparent when I did the upgrade and still no sign of MP3 or DVD playing capabilities. I also don't mean for it to sound like FC6 was/is issue free. It's not. After having evolution-exchange working perfectly out of the box (base FC6 with no updates) evolution-exchange updates are badly broken. I have to exclude evolution from being updated in the apt.conf and yum.conf. I also had a difficult time getting WPA working with ndiswrapper for the Broadcom wireless on the new laptop I picked up on Sunday. I think the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/network-functions has a typo in that it will never call the ifup-wireless script. It calls the ifup-eth script even if you have your card configuration type set to the "Wireless". I modified that and still couldn't get it to work the way it is "supposed" to work. That is using the wpa_client service.
I had to actually disable the service and call wpa_client and dhclient at the end of the ifup-wireless script to get it to work. The wpa_client service actually did seem to be working in that it would bring up wpa_client, associate with the access point but when the "ifup wlan0" was called dhclient would not get an address and just time out. The only way I could get it to work is by forcing wpa_client to reassociate while dhclient tried to get an address. I don't know if it's a timing issue or maybe even a wpa_client.conf setting that is causing the problem but I worked on it a long time before coming up with a solution that would actually work with "ifup/ifdown".
I guess those were the major issues I had, compiz is hit and miss depending on what video hardware you have. Other than that I would say FC6 has been pretty solid and has a lot of new touches that I really like.
anyway, when I get that desktop, I'll prbably use it to replace this one, then see if I can get £50 for my old one at one of those computer recycle places....actually £20 would be nice. I am at the point now where I'm getting tired of all the cards, towers, motherboards, RAM wiring and power sources laying around....
