Those files are typically shell archives so there are two ways of executing them:

1:

Code: Select all

$ chmod +x file.bin
$ ./file.bin
or 2:

Code: Select all

$ sh file.bin

I think the command to run it is realplay
To be sure you can check in /usr/bin to see what's the exact name of the executable, you should see realplay or something really similar in there (provided it installed correctly)

There was no documentation on Real's web site? Usually there are installation and run instructions there.

EDIT: I went to www.real.com and the installation instructions were right under the download button (if it detects you are running Linux based on your useragent that is):

http://www.real.com/moreinfo/playerplus ... stem=linux

I just downloaded and ran the binary which prompted me for an installation directory. If you look in the installation directory where you installed it you will find a file called "realplay" which is the program you want to run. There is also a README, browser plugin, etc.

installing realplayer is pretty straightforward, but it's not "normal". i think they should just have normal rpms, debs etc on their site. they take a very sun microsystems approach to linux installation.

incidentally, i find it easier to use the magnificent set of scripts from http://wma2mp3.501megs.com to convert from realaudio (and realvideo, if you have music videos) into mp3s or oggs, using mplayer, this way i can listen to any stray realaudio files i happen to get without having to have the (enormous) realplayer installed.

of course if you want to watch stuff, or stream stuff, this is no use to you... :D

Personally I don't use realplayer because MPlayer plays all the real audio/video (along with everything else that isn't DRM infested).

to get things off my NTFS for XP, MPlayer has been acting like it hates audio, or maybe I'm just missing an add on....

Yeah, you have to have all the plugins installed. MPlayer plays everything I throw at it with the exception of the DRM infested WMV files but I have only run into two of those so far.
