Sounds like he already has two systems? Why not use one for Windows with whatever software he uses and use Linux on the other one for all the surfing/email/etc?

I have used Kino and Cinelerra for editing video and various tools for creating the DVDs but if he's already familiar with that he could either dedicate a system for video or better yet just dual boot it when he wants to edit his video. He could do a fresh minimal install for it and not use it for surfing.

nope he has just one system but this is one of the things holding him back from converting it from windoze to linux , will suggest the dual boot with minimal windoze config

Actually he wouldn't have to reinstall Windows at all, just get the "BING" disk to resize the partition and then install Linux on the new free unpartitioned space (you probably already know this). BING:

P.S. When you boot the disk you do *not* want to install BootIt when it asks, just use the partitioning tools.
