HI All,

I got a DVD with StartCom Linux on it in my June issue of Linux Format. It's a RHEL clone, and I installed it today.

I'd heard of Whitebox Linux and, of course, CentOS, and have played with both in the past. But I'm quite impressed with StartCom. It's available at:

http://startcom.org

In addition to the "pure" enterprise edition which I installed, they also have a multimedia edition based on FC6 but which includes all the multimedia codecs. I haven't tried the multimedia version, but am quite impressed with what I did install. Of course, since it's really RHEL 5, I expected nothing less. The only thing that surprised me was that SELinux is disabled by default and if you choose to enable it during the install, you'll be in for a nasty surprise. Evidently they haven't set up proper contexts for the files and I got so many "AVC denied" errors on my first "real" boot (the one after firstboot) that I was unable to boot and had to manually powerdown, then pass the "selinux=0" parameter through grub and then disable SELinux through "system-config-securitylevel" to get it squared away. I am going to do a bit of research, but can probably fix things with a "restorecon -v -R /" and then reenable SELinux when I get around to it.

One thing I like is that their forum is VERY actively moderated by Startcom and the questions I asked were very promptly and well answered by StartCom employees.

Anyway, since I haven't been able to install F7 yet and felt the need to at least *try* to hose my computer, I tried this out and thought that I'd pass my experiences along.

Have a great weekend,

Jim
