voidmain.is-a-geek.net server died, dead, gone...

Well, at least the power supply went. I normally check in over lunch to see if there is anything going on in the forums and I noticed I couldn't get to the site. I called my son (who was home because there was a snow day today) and he said the power was off. He said it powered up all the way but I still couldn't get to it. So I left work a little early and I get home and the power like was off again. I pushed the button and it turned green for about a second and then went back off. I vacuumed everything out and it seems to be fried. The fan appears to turn pretty hard so I think it may have froze up and then something fried.
I don't have any spare power supplies for that old piece of junk PC so I had to yank the hard drive and added it in to the main desktop. So the desktop is now doing double duty, the site should actually seem much faster since it has a lot more resources and *isn't* a piece of junk. I think I have all functionality up and going without losing anything (except a few hours of down time). I don't know if I should look for another power supply or maybe just order one of those Wal-Mart bargain basement PCs to become the new voidmain.is-a-geek.net server. Can I still get one for less than $200? I don't feel like building one and the one it was running on was a sub-$200 PC from several years ago.
Just thought I would let you know what happened in case you tried to get here and couldn't today. Hopefully the kids don't shut it off, I didn't tell anyone I moved the site to the desktop... It normally runs 24x7 so there shouldn't be any problems.

That is it. Its not a very bad system. Looks decently upgradable to for the future.

Cool, those looks like the *perfect* specs for the new void server. It has twice as much RAM, 3 times as much processor (actually more because the old one was a K6-2), and 5 times as much disk space, and surely a faster disk. I could do without the keyboard, mouse and speakers though, too bad they wouldn't knock a little off and not ship them.
I also am curious with the "Linare Linux OS" really is, I could do without that as well. I really like the "batteries not included" line in the specs. I'm sure it's the speaker batteries but it doesn't say. Maybe I can slip this past the wife on the credit card. I already get chewed out for putting too much dirt bike stuff on it. Whadya gonna do? :) Maybe I'll look around a little locally before buying one. I can't imagine being able to build one cheaper though.

thank good for the power going off
i thought you had left me hanging here...lol

I wish it was just the power going off. Then I wouldn't have to scrounge up a new computer or power supply.

Wow, I can't believe how much difference there is in speed now that it's running on the faster desktop vs the piece-o-junk it was running on. At work it used to crawl and now it screams! Guess I better just get another machine rather than trying to find a new power supply for the old one.

What type of power supply does it take? If you really want one i could nab one from school and ship it off to you.

It's silver, it has a couple of plugs hanging out of it, and it's supposed to blow air. :) I don't know much about power supplies, how can I tell what type it is? I know the power supply from my old Pentium 100 machine won't work as it has a P1 and P2 plug and has a power switch cable, where the one I need need has a single plug that plugs into the motherboard with two rows of pins and no power switch cable. I suppose I could ask around at work if they have any machines they are junking that I might be able to grab one out of. I almost don't want to get it running again because I absolutely hate that machine. It's a 450Mhz machine that seems as slow as a 100Mhz Pentium.

That is an atx power supply. It is what all moderm computers use. If you want one i could grab one form school tomorow and send it off to you. or you could just go with the walmart machine which would probally be worth it

Well I really appreciate it. I'm thinking I might be able to scrounge something at work. If I can't I'll let you know and maybe take you up on your offer.

I live in the state of confusion and I haven't had a full week of school since 1981. :) Actually, my kid's school was cancelled today for a slight chance of a little snow and freezing rain.I think a friend has a spare ATX power supply. He's going to check tonight and bring it in tomorrow if he has it. I can also get a bare bones machine from the Wal-Mart web site with no OS and no hard drive for like $160. That's still a little more than free but it's getting closer. :)

void main i always notice how you evade questions which might specify personal details about yourself! excellent! after years of forum posting, the closest thing i have seen about you is a quick shot of your hands playing the bass! i know nothing about your name, address, age etc. i imagine i could look up stuff based on your IP, and i know you mentioned your age once, although as time passed i forgot.
sorry i kind of went off topic, but it's just most people let something slip, their first name or their town, most people who i have been reading for years i know some things about. it'squite conspicuous that i know nothing about you, void! i even found out the real name of the webmaster from microsuck (although i have since forgotten!)
