3 years ago, Europe was very much against software patents, recognising that the ill informed approach to doling out vague intellectual property rights would ultimately kill innovation, now it appears the European parliament no longer sees a need to protect the right to reinvent the wheel, potentially jeopardising projects such as GIMP, Mozilla and Linux/GNU.

Patents, Open Source model under threat
Thanks for bringing this to our attention Calum, I heard about it a while ago but for one reason or another I completely forgot about it.
I'll contact the EP Information Office in Brussels asap to let them know how I feel about this and I suggest everyone does the same for his country, there's a very useful link for doing that at the end of the news-article on promote-opensource.org.
